Consider this post as Part Two of ‘English Vinglish’ that I had posted a couple of months ago.
Time and again I come across people who use the English language without any care for it. It is at such people that I aim this post with a request that they stop inventing a new version!
Like I clarified in my earlier post, I appreciate sincere efforts and I’m always happy to help. All of you learners please don’t take offence. I’m one of you.
I’m not going to beat around the bush. Let’s go straight to the point!
1) What is it with people who ask “That’s your ‘REAL’ brother/ sister?”
Define real! I mean why would I go around telling people about imaginary ones!
I am aware of the common practice of considering someone, say a friend, to be your brother or sister, but just because they aren’t related to you, doesn’t make them unreal!
2) I know time is precious and everyone wishes for more than 24 hours a day! There’s never enough time! That’s probably the reason behind cutting short words. No, I’m not talking about abbreviations like LOL. Those are acceptable. What is not acceptable is;
Awesum (Awesome),
Tht (That),
Wht (What),
K (Ok/Okay),
Tnku (Thank you)
You guys really think chopping off one alphabet will make a life-changing difference? Please don’t save your time by murdering the English language. You don’t need that on your conscious. I mean conscience*.
See? That’s what I told you. Even I make mistakes! 😛
(I just missed slipping and breaking a leg as I rushed out of my bath to correct that one!)
3) Dear Wannabes (pun intended), I’d like to bring to your notice that you may get your imitation of the American pronunciation of words right BUT that is NOT how they spell it.
My remains ‘MY’. Just because you choose to pronounce it as ‘ma’, doesn’t mean you change the spelling of the word.
Same is the case with YOU. It is not spelt as ‘ya’ unlike it’s pronunciation.
‘Watcha doing’ only sounds cool. The word ‘watcha’ is yet to find a place in the Oxford dictionary!
Phew… I’ll end this post here.
There will be a Part Three soon enough!
What!!??? Don’t look at me with anger. It’s not like I derive pleasure out of ridiculing people but the above mentioned points are valid and those we could really do without!
Cheers! 😀
